Have you ever searched for the perfect symbiosis of a big capital city and a cute romantic village? Then you will find Münster is the answer to that request.
With its almost 300 000 inhabitants in the west of Germany, Münster belongs to the most beautiful cities in the country: Not only was the Prinzipalmarkt (the historical centre) voted the fourth beautiful place of the country, but in 2004 Münster also won the UNEP Live-Com-Award for the most liveable city worldwide. Criteria for the selection are the high quality of life, environmental aware living, structuring of the historical heritage and integrated future planning.
In history books, Münster is best known for being the site of negotiating and signing the Peace of Westphalia ending the Thirty Years’ War in 1648. This event is seen as the beginning of the modern international system of sovereign states. For visitors, another aspect might be even more remarkable: Münster is said to be the bicycle capital of Germany, with two to three bikes per capita. Due to the flat landscape and efficient structure, you can pass old buildings, beautiful parks or vibrant shopping streets within minutes. The ‘bicycle freeway’ called Promenade is reserved for bicycle traffic and pedestrians and thus the best way to get around town fast.
The town has a very active night life with over 1,000 bars and clubs and the city of the Westphalian Peace also has – of course – a very rich cultural life: There are several museums, theatres and cinemas. Instead of big industry, the city relies on administration and services and thus keeps its worthwhile charm. Enjoy the spirit of this unique town and let these various highlights enchant you during your stay!
Full of bicycles, cozy cafés and party locations – Münster is a must-see for people interested in Germany!
Once you have applied for the conference it is time to start looking for accommodation. There are several places you can choose from if you’re looking for a nice place to stay:
Travelling to Münster
Coming by plane: Even though Münster has its own small airport (Airport Münster/Osnabrück), we suggest you fly to the airports Düsseldorf or Cologne/Bonn.
Connections from Düsseldorf Airport to Münster:
Connections from Cologne/Bonn Airport to Münster:
To travel more comfortably and faster you can book an IC or ICE -tickets. Please keep in mind that this saves you only 20 minutes time and is more expensive.
Coming by train: You can book tickets online or at the service desk at the train station. To book online follow this link: https://int.bahn.de/en
Coming by bus: You can also use different long-distance buses to get to Münster from other European Cities. You may find offers for example at Eurolines or Flixbus
The majority of Münster’s population uses their bikes. It is indeed the fastest way to get to your destination. There is a reason Münster is called city of bicycles. Not only do they make up 39 percent of the city’s traffic, but there are also cycle paths almost everywhere.
If you do not live in Münster you can rent a bike from the bicycle station, bike dealers and other suppliers.
However, we recommend www.radstation.de.
We recommend walking in the inner city center, pavements are available everywhere, the city is very pedestrian friendly. Nevertheless, when walking please be aware of the cyclists, they are not always as considerate as you maybe expect.
We can only partially recommend to bring your own car, it can be difficult to find a suitable car park, affordable parking space in the inner city is rather scarce
An option could be to park you car at a park and ride parking lot and take public transport from there (e.g. click here )
You may also take the bus. The bus system covers the whole city.
Despite that we have an amazing offer: Each participant will be granted ticket for free to use all local public transport in the city of Münster!!!!
Public transport app: “Fahrplan MS” or "münster:app" which you can find in the App Store or Google Play Store.
You can also use the “DB Navigator” application.
This application has the advantage that changing the user language into English is possible.
Taking a taxi is also usually an option, please be aware that the fares are rather expensive, so maybe consider sharing the fare with other delegates going in the same direction.
